An open cardioid condenser capsule and preamplifier in one package, the Schoeps CMC622G-SET consists of their MK 22 Capsule matched with their CMC 6 U Amplifier module. The CMC6 amplifier forms the body of the microphone with the capsule simply screwing on to its top.
CMC 6 U Microphone Amplifier
The Colette series of condenser microphone capsules can't be directly connected to microphone cables or inputs – a microphone amplifier is required between; a complete microphone of the Colette series consists of capsules combined with an amplifier.
Engineered for standard 48- and 12-Volt phantom powering, the CMC 6 U microphone amp's circuitry recognizes the supply voltage and self-adjusts automatically. Either way, its performance characteristics remain essentially the same; mainly, the difference being that the current drawn at 12 Volts is greater than at 48 Volts. However, the 12-Volt mode consumes less power and might be preferred for battery-powered recording.
The capsule requires an electrostatic charge in order to produce a signal, which the microphone amplifier provides. Since only a miniscule amount of current is contained within this signal, amplification of the current is needed. To avoid interference to the signal on the way from the microphone to the input of the mixer or preamp, the signal is conveyed at low impedance and in balanced form. The CMC 6 amplifier offers a symmetrical, transformerless, direct-coupled Class A output stage with low impedance, low distortion, and high freedom from interference.
MK 22 Mic Capsule
Developed in 2008 by Schoeps, the “Open Cardioid” directional pattern, occupies a point on the spectrum between the wide cardioid and classic cardioid patterns. Its response is -5 dB at 90°, with a 16 dB suppression of rear-incident sound, so in essence it's a variant cardioid pattern which balances a very natural sound quality with a good amount of directionality.
The years of experience which many recording engineers have had with various types of Schoeps cardioid mics have contributed to the design process of this package. The MK 4 cardioid (sold separately) is often relied upon as a reference microphone, even in difficult recording situations. Its sonic transparency and outstanding suppression of rear-incident sound make it a universal problem-solver. The MK 21 wide cardioid (sold separately) offers an alternative when its lower directivity fits the recording situation, e.g. for the first desk of strings or for solo piano. This capsule type is prized for its sonic character (similar to that of a purely omnidirectional microphone) and relative absence of proximity effect. Then the wish arose for a “middle way” which would combine these characteristics into a single capsule, resulting in the MK 22 Open Cardioid.
