A member of Roland's recently updated JUNO line of workhorse synthesizers, latest-generation JUNO-DS88 offers many enhancements over previous generations: improved sound and response for acoustic and electric piano sounds, additional organ sounds, Phrase pads, vocal effects and waveform expansion capability via USAB for unlimited tonal range. The unit’s piano sounds have a quality touch and playability that rivals Roland’s other, acclaimed digital pianos. Complete sound sets from other, similar synthesizers—such as the JUNO-Di—are also included, and patches from those keyboards are fully compatible with this model. This is the first model in the Juno series’ long history to feature weighted keys, employing Roland’s Ivory Feel-G Keyboard with progressive hammer action.
It also features nonstop operation, enhancing the creative flow, and enabling quick development of full arrangements. The sequencer is convenient for supporting live performances with pre-made backing music or on-the-fly looping. Despite its impressive onboard sound set, it's even possible to load in WAV files from your personal library and play them from the keyboard, plus this impressive unit comes supplied with an all-star rock/pop EXP-06 Studio Collection sound bank.
It includes enhanced editing controls—another highlight—which allows players to dig in and customize with more adjustable parameters than ever before, providing them with the ability to tweak patches and performances with detailed precision. Furthermore, its front panel provides an expanded array of hands-on knobs and sliders for creating patches and adjusting sounds as you perform, while the rear panel features jacks for connecting hold and expression pedals at the same time.
If you happen to be a solo performer or singer/songwriter, you’re going to love the built-in mic input, which lets you get great vocal sounds with no need for additional gear to carry around. There’s a dedicated vocal reverb, plus Auto Pitch so you can sing with that “stepped” electronic vocal effect popular in today’s music. The onboard vocoder is big fun too, allowing you to sing into a mic and control the tone and pitch via sounds played on the keyboard.
It works great for computer music production as well, with its portability and versatility lending themselves nicely to teaching labs or other music education environments. The integrated USB interface provides a solid front end for a mobile or studio recording setup, allowing you to record MIDI and audio data, including sounds from the mic input. There's even a DAW Control mode, enabling control over your music software from its front panel.
And it can be powered either using batteries or the AC power supply.
