The Fredenstein F600A 500-Series Compressor offers a unique approach to compression, avoiding traditional methods such as VCAs, FETs, and Optos. Instead, it employs digitally controlled attenuator/amplifiers for gain reduction and make-up gain, resulting in a distinct sound described as smooth, clean, and capable of extreme output levels.

This high-performance tool, ideal for recording and mastering engineers, features an analog gain control circuit combined with a digital side-chain using two DSPs, achieving over 20 dB of gain reduction with minimal distortion. Up to ten units can be linked for precise multi-channel compression.

Key controls include Threshold, Compression Ratio (1:1 to 100:1), Attack and Release times, Make-Up Gain, and selectable RMS/PEAK and Hard-Knee/Soft-Knee settings. It also includes a tunable high-pass filter up to 4 kHz, making it versatile for use as a De-Esser or cutting speed limiter. An analog VU meter displays gain reduction traditionally.

When used with a Fredenstein Bento 6D or 10D, settings are displayed on the Bento's LCD, simplifying accurate recalls. The F600A features a fully balanced signal path with lower distortion, translating to cleaner, punchier sounds without the digital feel. Its low output impedance and high current design can drive complex loads up to +26 dBu without sonic degradation.
