The Fredenstein Commander Remote Control enables close placement of the mic preamp to the microphone while retaining control over all features of the Fredenstein HD REFERENCE Mic Preamp. This setup preserves delicate mic-level signals, sending a robust line-level signal over a standard mic cable to converters, consoles, or compressors over reasonable distances. The Commander includes a LOCK button to prevent unauthorized adjustments at the remote preamp.
Designed similarly to the HD Reference, the Commander replicates all controls except for meters, as it does not process audio. Instead, a two-color LED indicates signal presence (green) or near clipping (+24 dBm, red). Monitoring is typically done using the recording device's meters. The LOCK button prevents accidental adjustments when the HD Reference is remotely located.
Fredenstein provides two short 3-meter mic cables with the Commander to encourage proximity between the HD Reference and microphones, minimizing cable capacitance that can affect high frequencies and phase response. The control cable functions like a balanced mic cable, employing technology akin to 2400 baud modems for reliable bi-directional communication over distances. This signal is transformer-isolated and low-level to prevent interference with audio lines.
While using the Commander, gain adjustments may appear slightly delayed due to communication verification with the HD Reference, ensuring precise settings and preventing communication faults. Pressing the LOCK button ensures settings remain secure in remote setups.
